Improving lubrication reliability in plastic recycling operations

CONTEXT

In a French plastic bottle recycling facility, industrial shredders play a key role in processing large volumes of material into reusable raw inputs. These machines operate under demanding conditions, where continuous operation, high mechanical loads and exposure to moisture create a challenging environment for critical components such as bearings.

Reliable lubrication is essential to ensure smooth operation, prevent premature wear and maintain production efficiency. However, the combination of heavy loads, contamination and difficult accessibility makes consistent lubrication particularly challenging in this type of installation.

PROBLEM

The facility was previously using gas-driven lubricators filled with PTFE-based grease. However, the pressure generated by these systems was not sufficient to effectively deliver lubricant into the bearings, especially under high load and in contaminated environments.

As a result, lubrication was inconsistent, increasing the risk of wear and reducing component lifespan. In addition, the cost of consumables was considered high, placing further strain on maintenance budgets. The lack of clear monitoring also made it difficult for operators to verify whether lubrication was functioning correctly, particularly in a noisy and demanding production environment.

SOLUTION

Memolub HPS PLUS automatic lubricators were installed on the shredder bearings. Designed for high-pressure applications, the HPS system ensures reliable grease delivery even under heavy loads and in environments with high resistance.

The system’s visual alert functionality allows operators to quickly verify the status of each lubrication point, even in noisy surroundings where traditional monitoring methods are less effective. Some of the lubricators were installed remotely from the lubrication points, improving accessibility and enabling safer, more efficient maintenance operations.
