This case study focuses on the lubrication of GE Wind 2.5MW turbines, particularly targeting the blade orientation rings that utilise ZS polyurethane gear lubrication. Effective lubrication of these components is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and longevity of the wind turbines.
MEMOLUB® HPS
Optimizing Wind Turbine Blade Lubrication
Context
Problem
The manual lubrication process, required every six months, presented significant challenges due to the relatively difficult access to the turbine blades. This not only increased maintenance time and labor costs but also posed safety risks for maintenance personnel.
Solution
To address these issues, a Memolub HPS system with a 240cc cartridge was installed on each blade, utilizing EP2 grease. The system was configured to expel 0.6 cm³ of grease every 24 hours, ensuring consistent lubrication. With this setting, the cartridge lasts for 12 months before needing replacement. This automated system ensures that the lubrication is evenly distributed and maintained without the need for frequent manual intervention.
Results
The implementation of the Memolub system resulted in several benefits. The system provided excellent lubrication, ensuring that the blades operated smoothly and efficiently. The automated lubrication process guaranteed permanent lubrication, significantly reducing the need for manual maintenance. With the Memolub system in place, maintenance personnel no longer needed to access the difficult-to-reach areas as frequently, thereby enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
