Optimizing Lubrication for Gear Wheel Bearings in Glass Production


This case study focuses on the lubrication of gear wheel bearings in conveyor arches at a prominent glass manufacturing facility. These conveyors are vital for transporting glass products through various production stages. Proper lubrication of the gear wheel bearings is essential to ensure smooth operation and prevent downtime.


The bearings were located behind protective covers, making them difficult to access. This inaccessibility led to irregular lubrication intervals, compromising maintenance effectiveness. Additionally, the large number of lubrication points made it challenging to manage the lubrication process manually, resulting in increased wear and potential mechanical failures.


To address these issues, two Memolub HPS systems with distributors were installed, utilizing COGELSA Ultragrease ALFA 2 grease. The systems were configured to deliver consistent lubrication to all points, ensuring that each bearing received adequate maintenance at regular intervals. Notably, the grease used has NSF H1 certification, indicating it is safe for incidental food contact, which is crucial for maintaining high hygiene standards in manufacturing environments.


The implementation of the Memolub HPS systems led to several positive outcomes. The gear wheel bearings received effective and consistent lubrication, adhering to the required schedules. This automation significantly reduced the labor required for maintenance, allowing the facility to reallocate personnel to other critical tasks. As a result, the longevity and reliability of the conveyor system were greatly enhanced, contributing to the overall efficiency of the production process. Less relevant, but interesting to mention is that the use of NSF H1 certified grease ensured compliance with stringent hygiene standards, further enhancing the facility’s operational integrity.
