In this case study, we explore the improvements made to the lubrication of vertical turbines used in a hydroelectric power system. These turbines, which feature 24 water flow control flaps, rely heavily on the proper maintenance and lubrication of the lower pivots of these flaps for efficient operation.
Memolub® HPS
Enhancing vertical turbine efficiency with automated lubrication.
Context
Problem
The turbines operated autonomously with minimal supervision and maintenance personnel. This lack of regular maintenance resulted in insufficient lubrication, leading to contamination from water and sediments in the pivots, causing wear, corrosion, and ultimately, blockage of the regulation flaps. These issues significantly hindered the performance and efficiency of the turbines.
Solution
To resolve these issues, 24 Memolub HPS automatic lubrication system with 240cc cartridges were installed. This setup ensures daily lubrication by delivering small doses of bio grease, maintaining consistent lubrication across a distance of approximately 6 meters. Additionally, the system only requires annual replacement of consumables (batteries + cartridges), reducing the need for frequent maintenance checks.
Results
The first turbine was equipped with a Memolub system in 2017, and since then, no blockages have been reported. Encouraged by this success, a multiple other turbine were equipped with the same solution. This automated lubrication solution has significantly enhanced the efficiency and reliability of the vertical turbines, ensuring smoother operations and reduced maintenance efforts.
